The Motor Runs and the Door Stays Put
If you can hear the motor working but nothing moves, the drive gear has usually stripped. On chain drive units that is a plastic gear sitting on a steel worm shaft, and it is a wear item, not a failure of the whole unit. A gear kit and an hour of labour is often the entire repair on an opener that otherwise has years left in it.
The other possibility is that the trolley has been left disengaged. If someone pulled the red emergency release cord and it never re-latched, the motor drives the chain and the door simply is not attached to it.
Safety Sensors Cause More Callouts Than Anything Else
Those two small units near the floor on either side of the opening have to see each other. If the beam is broken the door will close a few inches and reverse, or refuse to close at all, and the opener light will usually flash to tell you so.
Half the time nothing is broken. A bike leaning against a bracket, a cobweb across a lens, or a knock that pushed one sensor out of alignment will do it. Morning sun coming in low through an open door can also blind a sensor, which is why some doors misbehave only at one time of day. It is worth checking the lenses and the alignment before calling anyone.
Chain, Belt and Screw Drives Age Differently
Chain drives are the most common and the most tolerant. They are noisy, and on a garage sharing a wall with a bedroom that noise matters, but they last. Belt drives run quietly and suit attached garages, though the belt itself is a wear part in Florida humidity. Screw drives have fewer moving parts and need the rail greased periodically, which almost nobody does, and that is what usually kills them.
Knowing which one you have changes the diagnosis. If you are not sure, look at what runs along the rail above the door and tell us what you see.
When Replacement Beats Repair
An opener made before 1993 has no photo eye sensors and does not meet current safety requirements. Those we replace rather than repair. Past roughly fifteen years, when the logic board goes, the cost of the board approaches the cost of a new unit with a fresh warranty, and replacing is the better value.
