What a Broken Spring Sounds Like
Most people hear it before they see it. A torsion spring lets go with a single loud bang, often mistaken for something falling in the garage or a gunshot outside. After that the door either will not open at all, or it opens a few inches and stops. If you look at the shaft above the door opening and see a gap of an inch or two in a tightly wound coil, that is the break.
Extension springs, the long ones running parallel to the tracks on either side, fail differently. They stretch out over time and lose tension gradually, so the door gets heavier and the opener works harder for weeks before anything snaps.
Torsion and Extension Are Not Interchangeable
Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks and stretch. Which one you have determines the parts, the labour and the safety procedure, and it is not something to guess at from a photo.
Springs are also rated by cycles. A standard spring is built for roughly 10,000 open and close cycles. A household that runs the door six or eight times a day gets through that in about four years. Higher cycle springs cost more up front and last considerably longer, which is usually the better call on a door that gets heavy daily use.
Why This One Is Not a DIY Job
A torsion spring holds several hundred pounds of stored energy even when the door is closed. Releasing it without the correct winding bars is how people lose fingers and break wrists. The bars have to be the right diameter for the winding cone, and hardware store substitutes slip.
Springs are also usually replaced in pairs. If one has reached the end of its cycle life the other is days or weeks behind it, and replacing one alone means a second callout and a second labour charge shortly after.
