The lift cables are the steel lines running down each side of the door from the drum at the top to a bracket at the bottom section. They carry the spring’s pull down to the door itself. When one fails the door goes crooked immediately, and running it in that state is what turns a straightforward cable job into a bent track and a damaged section.
How Cables Actually Fail
Fraying is the usual start. The cable is wound steel strand, and as it passes over the drum thousands of times individual strands break and the line takes on a fuzzy look before it parts. That fuzz is visible weeks ahead if anyone looks, which almost nobody does.
Rust is the other cause, and it is more common here than in most of the country. Water sitting at the bottom bracket after an afternoon storm attacks the cable exactly where it anchors, so the failure point is often the last few inches at the bottom rather than anywhere you would notice.
A Door Hanging Crooked Is a Cable Problem
If one side of the door is higher than the other, or the door binds and grinds part way up, a cable has either snapped or come off its drum. Sometimes the cable is intact and has simply unwound and jumped the groove, which happens when a door is closed onto an obstruction and the cable goes slack.
Either way the door is now being lifted from one side. Keep using it and the rollers get forced against the track, the track bends, and the top section takes the strain. That is the difference between a cable replacement and a section replacement.
Cables and Springs Are One System
Cables and springs wear on the same clock, because they do the same work. A cable that has frayed through is often telling you the spring is near the end of its cycle life too, and a spring that broke will frequently take a cable with it as the door drops.
We replace cables in pairs for the same reason we replace springs in pairs. Matched lengths keep the door running square, and a new cable paired with a stretched old one on the other side puts the door out of level from day one.
Do Not Keep Running It
If you can see fraying, or the door is sitting at an angle, stop using the opener and leave the door down. Pull the emergency release only if the door is already closed. Releasing a crooked door that is part way up lets it fall, and a double door falling from four feet does real damage to whatever is under it.
